A total of 964 passengers and crew were on board with the Superferry 9 when it left the General Santos port bound for Iloilo at 8:45am Saturday. However, as it sailed off the Southern Zamboanga Peninsula, the ferry started to tilt terrifying passengers and sent others to jump into the water. According to some passengers, the ship was already tilting at midnight of Saturday. But they were told to be calm and that the situation was fine. Authorities also said that the Superferry 9 crews tried to save the ship. But on the early dawn of Sunday, the ship listed more angle which caused passengers to panic.
